It is important to fail sometimes

Congratulations to our friends who passed the baccalaureate exam! These days I am sure many of you are busy filling in those colourful university orientation forms. This is a defining moment in your lives and an opportunity to take stock of your high school years and reflect on the way forward.

This may sound like an old man cliché but ‘when I was your age’ I wish I had the opportunity to interact with someone, anyone, from the alumni community to give me insights about the shape of things to come. My bac results were unexpectedly bad and I was worried about my future. Every adult around me was worried as well because the options, if any, seemed quite limited.

I would not call my bac result a failure per se because after all I passed with a satisfactory mark that (barely) helped me get into IHEC, and later start a career in international relations that never seemed like an option at that time. But it was certainly a blow to an ambition that I had nurtured through years of flawless performance. Like all good pioneer school pupils I had never experienced failure before the bac because I had internalised the idea that it should never be an option. So I diligently made sure I achieved the arithmetic average and much more to pass every year.

Looking retrospectively, however, I wish I had been taught that being successful and competitive does not mean being flawless. I kept in touch with many old friends, some of whom were sacked from the school precisely for failing to achieve the arithmetic average, and it turns out that most went for the most outstanding career choices and are now in leadership positions in various sectors. That has always puzzled me.

There might be many reasons behind this but the ones that come to mind are the following:

  • People who fail are able to think of alternatives and keep their options open. This is a fundamental aspect of academic and professional success. If you have only one goal and are not able to think of alternative scenarios should you not be able to attain that goal, you will stagnate. This is especially true for those of you who have focussed on some subjects (e.g. maths and sciences) and ignored others (e.g. philosophy and languages). You will realise later in life that all subjects matter equally and all will be useful to you.
  • People who fail learn to take risks and move on. They know how to make the most of anything that comes their way. They do not see the world in black-and-white, win-or-lose fashion. They learn to see every little opportunity as a major one. They come to see every experience as a good experience. People for whom failure is never a possibility stay where they are, simply because they do not experiment.
  • People who fail learn to listen and take advice. The absence of a mentoring culture in our schools that appreciates people’s potential beyond their exam performance has made many of us take it for granted that a good mark is your only measure of success. Those who fail understand why this is a wrong assumption and turn for advice on how to handle a crisis situation, which enhances their ability to judge and plan for future contingency. That makes them future leaders.

So as you fill in your colourful forms and worry about your score always be confident that regardless of what you will end up doing, you will be fine, so long as you are able to keep an open mind and think outside the box. And do seek advice from members of our thriving alumni community, who are more than happy to help.

I wish you all the very best !
